Saint-Imier (Switzerland), January 28th, 2008 – Swiss brand Longines just turned out its 34 millionth watch. This timepiece, a HydroConquest from the Longines Sport Collection, is showcased at the 34 Million Watches museum in Saint-Imier. The 34 millionth Longines watch is a HydroConquest from the Longines Sport Collection that was launched in 2007. This diving watches line met a great success among sports and watchmaking enthusiasts. The company, which celebrated 175 years of existence in 2007, accurately records all 34 million timepieces produced in Saint-Imier since 1832. Their character evidently reflects the period of their production. Horological design and production correspond to definite periods, apparent in the production technology which has sometimes been developed by, for and at Longines. Each period will have its own ideas about the standards a watch should meet and how it should be built. It also reflects the evolving notions regarding the conditions and constraints under which watches have been produced. The Museum of the 34 Millionth seeks to display the basic parameters of watch manufacturing in 34 showcases, each symbolising one million timepieces. It provides an overview of what watch manufacturing involves, period after period, suggesting trains of thought on the amount of time needed for the allegorical production of one million timepieces. Each showcase features period visual and written material, which seeks to throw new light on the underlying implications of Longines’ own manufacturing activities. Based in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, since 1832, the Longines maison can boast more than 175 uninterrupted years of watchmaking expertise and 130 years of sporting heritage as timekeeper for world championship events and partner of international federations. Located in more than 130 countries, Longines is part of Swatch Group S.A., leading world manufacturer of timepieces. Press release |
