In four out of the nine races sailed, he turned a middle or low top ten result into a race winning position on the downwind legs.
On Saturday August 16th, Ben Ainslie was guaranteed at least the silver medal. In the Finn fleet, on Sunday August’s 17th in Medal Race, Ben started as favourite to defend his Olympic crown, holding the 12-point overall lead ahead the surprise star of the Finn fleet, Zach RAILEY of the USA.

Ben’s story The two-time ISAF World Sailor of the Year competed in his first Olympics in 1996 in Atlanta when he was 19 years old, taking home the silver medal in the Laser. After winning back-to-back Laser Worlds in 1998 and 1999, Ainslie brought home his first gold medal from Sydney in 2000. After switching to the Finn in 2002, he won three consecutive world championships, and went on to capture the gold in Athens. Since then, Ainslie has won two more Worlds, giving him a total of seven world championship titles. Ben Ainslie made his fourth consecutive Olympic appearance when sailing in Qingdao where the Beijing 2008 regatta took place and will aim for his 4th in 4 years time when the Games will be held in his country in 2012.
In winning his third consecutive Olympic gold medal, Ben is now the joint second most decorated sailor at the Olympics - ever. He has also earned himself a place in British Olympic history as the most decorated of all British Olympic sailors, an honour that has sat with Rodney PATTISSON's two gold and a silver medal in 1968, 1972 and 1976 for over 30 years.
Ainslie also has had a longtime dream of winning the America's Cup for Great Britain. After the 2000 Olympics, he joined the OneWorld America's Cup Crew, moving to Seattle for a few months, and then to Auckland to train. In 2007, he returned to the America's Cup at the helm of Emirates Team New Zealand. Named skipper of Team Origin, Ben hopes to fulfill a longtime dream of winning the America's Cup.
